WEEK 5 NEWS AND IMAGES - TERM 3

PRINCIPAL REPORT

Stage 3 Students

Over the past weeks I have had the opportunity to teach and work with our group of Stage 3 students. I have been blown away by the maturity shown, their creativity of thinking and by the sensible choices they make, particularly in the school playground and over the weekends. When faced with awkward life scenarios the students often replied calmly and sensibly the correct options. I look forward to the future, seeing their ideas become a reality. Good job!

Kindergarten Expo Night

Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and friends who attended our Kindy Expo night last Thursday evening. Parents who took the opportunity to visit the classrooms and tour the grounds were amazed at all the innovative learning that is happening throughout the school. Well done to our school captain for her moving speech and to Miss Essery for her organisation. Thank you also to our P&C President and teachers for giving up their time as well.

Book Week 18-24 August

The Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week was first celebrated in 1946 as a means of bringing words, images and stories into the hearts and minds of Australian Children. The theme for this year is Find Your Treasure.

We love to celebrate Book Week across the school with several events.

Today our students in K-6 participated in a sensational book character parade. Students were encouraged to dress up as one of their favourite book characters. The parade took place between 9.00am and 10.00am. Thank you to the many parents who attended. We hope that all the students got involved and enjoyed this special moment. Well done to Mr Jones on his organisation. Tomorrow, Wednesday 22 August the students will visit the Iluka Town Library to meet with Miss Jacqui and to view a range of suitable children’s books. To wrap up Book Week, on Friday 24 August Miss Mandy and her dance team including Molly, Alice and Millie will also be putting on a performance tied in with the Book Week theme. The Iluka preschool and our students will be attending.

Road Safety

Please ensure that you use the identified crossing on Charles Street when crossing the road and please do not park in our bus zone.

Father’s Day Breakfast

We will be holding a Father’s Day Breakfast on Friday 31 August, commencing at 7.00am. All fathers who attend will go into a lucky door prize. Thank you to Miss Lisa who has organised two prizes thanks to Iluka Bait and Tackle and to the Iluka Hardware shop. Please fill the attached form so that catering can be organised.

Premier’s Reading Challenge - Last Weeks

There are only a few weeks to go in the Premier’s Reading Challenge as it finishes on Friday 31 August 2018. All students wishing to complete the challenge for this year and be eligible for their certificate need to have their reading records finalised by this date.

Zone Athletics

On Thursday the Zone Athletics Carnival is on at Lismore . Hopefully, the sun will be shining setting the scene for a fantastic day of competitive athletics. Iluka will be represented by 17 students participating in a range of track and field events.

Sickness at School

During this time of colds and flu it is very important that we remind our students of the importance of hand hygiene. All the classrooms have soap and paper towel which students are encouraged to use before eating. Each toilet block has soap dispensers as well. Of course, if your child is unwell please do not send them to school as this adds to the spread of germs.

Hello Everyone. Book Week Parade - I was very impressed by everyone’s efforts to dress up for this morning’s parade. Well done, you all looked amazing! Thank you to those Parents and Carers who were able to come along and offer support. Following on from the parade the students stayed in character to write narrative’s about themselves and to perform some impromptu drama skits, which they filmed for future use. We had a fun, productive morning. This Week’s Focus - The main focus this week is on reading aloud, with fluency and expression. Also, how we can become a good storyteller. Please take a moment in your day to listen to your child read. Homework - To be returned on Fridays. Library - Library will be on Monday. Have a great week.

Book of the Week

Gangsta Granny

A story of prejudice and acceptance, funny lists and silly words, this new book has all the hallmarks of David's previous bestsellers. Our hero Ben is bored beyond belief after he is made to stay at his grandma's house. She's the boring-est grandma ever: all she wants to do is to play Scrabble, and eat cabbage soup. But there are two things Ben doesn't know about his grandma:

1) She was once an international jewel thief.

2) All her life, she has been plotting to steal the Crown Jewels, and now she needs Ben's help…
