Term 2 is off to a quick start and I am very much looking forward to continuing to work together to bring positive outcomes for our students.
This year, there are many invaluable events coming up that were significantly interrupted by COVID-19 in 2020. Some of these include;
Congratulations to all of the students for their wonderful participation in our ANZAC Day service on Sunday. I was very pleased and so very proud of the number of students from Iluka Public who attended the march, possibly as a Cub or Scout, and to our ex-students representing Maclean High School. I’m also especially proud of the students who played an active role in the service. I would like to thank the families who were able to support this very special day and to also thank Roxi for the rosemary sprigs and ANZAC biscuits. Much went on behind the scenes, to ensure that this was a special event for the community, as well as providing a safe and happy environment for the students. For that can I please thank Leah, Tim and the teaching staff for their assistance in making it a beautiful and memorable ANZAC Day in so many ways.
I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank Ex-serviceman Tim Plumb for his heartfelt speech as our special guest at the service and for the kind donation of 3 books for our school library.
A gallery of our ANZAC Day service photos can be found on the school website.
MOTHER’S DAY BBQ BREAKFAST
Please join us on Tuesday 4 May from 7.30 am to 8.45 am, in the top playground area, to celebrate mothers and the important mother figures in our student’s lives. If you could please RSVP by Friday 30 April for catering purposes, it would be greatly appreciated. A small RSVP slip has been sent home with your child or contact the office on 6646 6149.
Breakfast will include fruit, yoghurt, bacon and egg roll, tea, coffee and juice.
P & C MOTHER’S DAY STALL
Pleasingly, COVID guidelines allow us to this year hold the Iluka Public School P & C Mothers’ Day stall.
The stall will be open Tuesday 4 May. Gifts will range from $1 to $5.
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. Our school will be participating in NAPLAN Online between 11 and 17 May 2021. A detailed timetable for NAPLAN has been provided in this newsletter. In preparation for NAPLAN Online, our school has been participating in practice tests between 22 March and 1 April. The practice test was a trial-run and key preparation activity for NAPLAN Online in May. It is not an assessment of student ability and the tests will not be marked.
Excessive preparation for NAPLAN Online is not recommended. Students can use the public demonstration site (https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site) to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and tools available in the NAPLAN.
Online tests. If you have any questions about NAPLAN Online, please contact your child’s teacher.
SMALL SCHOOL’S CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL
This Friday, the Small Schools Cross Country Carnival will be taking place on the Iluka Golf Course. We wish those students attending all the very best. Details about the event have been previously provided on the permission note and via School Steam. If you require any information please refer to the School Stream app (Latest tab) or contact the office on 6646 6149
At the end of this newsletter please see the menu from Palmer's Island Public School for the event.
PSSA CRICKET KNOCKOUT COMP
Today, Iluka Public School are playing in the PSSA Cricket Knockout competition against the Maclean Public School. We wish our team the very best of luck. I shall report back next week with the results.
ILUKA PUBLIC SCHOOL’S SPELLING BEE
The Iluka Public School Spelling Bee was introduced in 2017 as a fun and educational way for our students to engage in spelling and is open to all students. The Spelling Bee encourages students to improve their vocabulary and spelling and to promote literacy skills in combination with the English K-6 Syllabus. All students will receive a copy of their applicable spelling words from their classroom teacher, so as practice can be managed and encouraged from home.
The Iluka Public School Spelling Bee contest will take place during Week 7, May 31 – June 2.
The Junior (Stage 2 - Yrs 3 & 4) and Senior (Stage 3 - Yrs 5 & 6) Champions of our event will be offered the opportunity to participate in the NSW Premier’s Spelling Bee Competition, which will be held later this year. Stage 2 and Stage 3 students will be using in our school spelling bee the spelling words for this year’s NSW PSB competition. They can be found at this link:

ILUKA PUBLIC SCHOOL - P & C TREASURER'S POSITION
The Iluka Public School’s P & C Committee is desperately seeking a Treasurer. Without this position being filled the P & C Committee for 2021 will fold. This will be a massive loss for the school. The P & C in past years have provided many avenues of much needed support to the school, ultimately to its students, through financial assistance with excursions, additional literacy supplies and wellbeing activities to name a few.
Perhaps one of the main supporting functions is our school Tuckshop. Without a P & C, then the operation of the school Tuckshop is in jeopardy.
The next P & C Meeting is tomorrow at 3:15 pm in the library. If you are unable to attend at this time and are willing to assist please contact myself on 6646 6149.
The Check-In Assessment is an online reading and numeracy assessment for students in Years 3 to 9. Our Year 4 and Year 6 students will be participating in the Check-in assessments during this week. Our Year 3 and 5 students will have access to the assessments during Term 4 (dates to be confirmed).
Very early preliminary work has commenced in the building process to provide a safe sun structure over the multipurpose court. Surveying of the site, soil samples and a tree arborist have been in readiness for the foundations have taken place. We are hopeful the structure will be completed before Term 4.
ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES
Parents must ensure their children attend school every day. On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:
being sick or having an infectious disease
having an unavoidable medical appointment
being required to attend a recognised religious holiday
exceptional or urgent family circumstances e.g. attending a funeral.
Parents must provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. Where an explanation has not been received within the 7-day timeframe, the school will record the absence as unjustified on the student's record.
STAGE 3 CANBERRA EXCURSION - PAYMENT PLANS
We would like to advise that parents and carers are welcome to make installments of any size or frequency towards the Canberra excursion. Payments can be made in cash, eft or POP on our website (with the payment type as excursion). If you require a payment plan, please contact myself on 6646 6149.
Have a great week. Phil

CLASS 2/3 NEWS
We are very fortunate to live in such a beautiful and scenic part of the world. We have the most stunning beaches at our doorstep as well as a healthy river system. We are lucky enough to have some interesting walks and a unique rainforest that leads us to the beach. The weather has been glorious which enables us all to enjoy and appreciate Iluka’s natural beauty.
Homework - has been given out for the week and is due in on Friday.
Home Reading - logs will be checked this Thursday.
Congratulations - to so many of the class that received an award for their artwork at the Maclean Show. We love our creative times in the classroom and so many of the students have really improved in this field.
ANZAC Day is a special day for so many of us. We all can be truly thankful for those brave men and women that put their own lives ‘on the line’ to enable us to live freely and still utilise our democratic rights. We are mindful of our Defence Force that at present still remain proactive in keeping our shores protected and the world powers accountable. All the girls and boys that marched on Sunday should feel very proud of themselves. They will carry the Anzac legacy into the future.
Enjoy Iluka! Di
