PRINCIPAL REPORT

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to Week 6, Term 3. As you would all now be aware, schools in the Clarence Valley have gone to remote learning, as we are now categorised as a Level 4 school, due to Regional NSW going into lockdown. That means Iluka Public School has had to put into place at short notice a range of plans so that students can participate in Learning from Home and if necessary, at school. Our main communication channels are by phone, via our Facebook page and/or School Stream. Learning from Home packs have been arranged for collection by the class teachers. We encourage everyone to access these if you haven’t already done so. Can I please thank the many parents who have collected their Learning from Home packs. I was very encouraged that we were trying to remain positive. Please note that the same unit of work is being completed whether at home or at school. Thank you to the teaching staff for your flexibility and promptness in arranging your class learning. To parents and carers, thank you for your understanding and support. If anyone requires any assistance or help please do not hesitate to contact me.

For further parental advice please visit the Department of Education’s website here https://education.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/advice-for-families?deliveryName=DM17466.

CANCELLED OR POSTPONED EVENTS

Unfortunately a number of upcoming events have been impacted due to our current lockdown situation. It will be dependant on future developments as to when these events will be rescheduled.

  • Life Education Van visit - postponed till Term 4

  • Zone Athletics Carnival - postponed, future date yet to be advised

  • Iluka Town Library Book Week visit - postponed, future date yet to be advised

  • Whole School Assembly - cancelled

At this stage events beyond the 1 week lockdown period are yet to considered. We will keep you informed as we go.

SCIENCE WEEK

This week sees Australian’s celebrating all things science with National Science Week. The 2021 theme is Food: Different By Design? The activities previously planned for school to celebrate this wondrous week have had to be postponed. However, there are many wonderful online activities you can search up if you would like to participate in this wondrous week of learning from home. Links such as the Resources tab at the National Science Week site https://www.scienceweek.net.au/ or some food related activities from TeachStarter https://www.teachstarter.com/au/blog/national-science-week-activities-for-kids-2021/

CYBER BULLYING

Last Wednesday Iluka Public School had a visit from, Snr Constable Jess Stamper from the Grafton Police Station, who had been invited by myself to address the students on various relevant topics. Jess talked to the Stage 1 students about a program called, Keeping Them Safe and to the Stage 3 students on Cyber Safety. During the information session with Years 5 and 6 a range of topics were discussed including internet safety, cyber bullying and the responsible use of the internet. It certainly was a very productive morning.

TOWN LIBRARY

A message from our town librarian, Tracey.

We are all in lockdown again so I have unfortunately had to postpone the CBCA Book Week activities.

I will be in touch when things go back to normal.

Could you please let everyone know that the town library will be operating a “click and collect” service so people can reserve items online or call on the days we are open - Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

PARENT SURVEYS

In preparation for the 2021 External Validation, and to inform future planning, last week we surveyed the school community. I understand people are managing challenging circumstances now, but I appreciated the many parents and carers who took the 5-10 minutes to complete the survey. Again I thank you for your support and assistance. Here are the results.

CWA PROJECTS - COUNTRY OF STUDY MALAYSIA

The annual Country Women's Association (CWA) Country of Study project details have arrived at school. This year's Country to study is ‘Malaysia’. For the first time, individual teachers and classes will submit their own version of the project, though alternative arrangements may have to be considered if our situation with Learning from Home continues past this week. Entries are due to be submitted to school no later than Monday 6 September 2021.

Stay safe. Phil

CLASS K/1 NEWS

A big thank you to parents and carers for collecting your childs Learning from Home pack. To complete the work that will be provided, your child will need to have a lead pencil, a packet of coloured pencils, an eraser and a pencil sharpener. Highlighters and texta pens are not required.

Curriculum … Spelling

Kindergarten - The Kindergarten students are now participating in our individualised ‘One Word A Day Spelling’ program. The students take home a slip of paper with the word printed on it that they have been learning to write in class for that day. Students then practice their word at home that night and a test the next day determines whether a new word is issued or more practice on the previous word is required.

Year One - Congratulations to the following students who have successfully learnt to spell all of the Year One Core List words - Willow, Elsie, Cody, Aryk and Jy. Our Year One spelling champions have already commenced working on the Year Two Core List words as extension work. Awesome results!

Lynne
